Ronni Maciel

Ronni Maciel was born in Carmo, Brazil. He studied classical ballet, modern dance and choreography at the Escola Estadual de Dança Maria Olenewa and the Ballet Dalal Achcar in Rio de Janeiro.

From 2001 to 2005 he danced for the Balé Teatro Guaira, the state ballet of Curitiba, Brazil. Here he worked alongside internationally-renowned choreographers, including Henrique Rodovalho, Dani Lima and Felix Landerer, in the genres classical ballet, modern and contemporary dance. During this time he also refined his skills in Latin-American dance and aerial acrobatics.

In 2005 he was invited by Deborah Colker to perform in the project Maracana Dance Company at Kampnagel in Hamburg, Germany. In 2006 he joined the company of Constanza Macras/DorkyPark in Berlin.  Brickland, Ronni’s first project with the company, premiered at the Schaubühne Berlin in 2007 and has since been performed to critical acclaim around the world. This was followed by further internationally-acclaimed dance projects including Hell on Earth (Hebbel-Theater Berlin, 2008), Oedipus Rex (Festspielhaus Hellerau Dresden, 2009), Megalopolis (Schaubühne Berlin, 2010), Berlin Elsewhere (Schaubühne Berlin, 2011) and Here/After (Hebbel-Theater Berlin, 2011).  The successful cooperation between Ronni Maciel and Constanza Macras continues to today.

Ronni proved his skills as a choreographer, as assistant to Constanza Macras, in the 2008 project Paraíso sem Consolação in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut in São Paulo, Brazil. In 2013 Ronni choreographed the German premiere of Chico Buarque’s Ópera do Malandro (the “Brazilian Beggar’s Opera”) at the Neuköllner Oper Berlin. In the same year he co-choreographed and performed in the film Anahí’s Room by director Ivalo Frank (premiere autumn 2013). Ronni’s solo piece, Diversion (choreographed, directed and performed by Ronni), premiered at the Ibero-American dance festival Platforma in Berlin in September 2013. In 2014 he directed and choreographed the performance Move in Between, a youth dance project at Caporeira Angola e.V. In the same year he was invited to choreograph aufBruch Prison Theatre’s production of Herr der Fliegen (Lord of the Flies) in Berlin. Most recently, Ronni played Josephine Baker in Julian Rosefeldt’s film Deep Gold, part of the exhibition Der Stachel des Skorpions at the Museum Villa Stuck Munich and the Institut Mathildenhöhe Darmstadt (March-October 2014).

As a trainer Ronni regularly gives workshops and dance courses. In 2009 he taught contemporary dance to the ensemble of the Staatstheater Kassel. Since 2013 he has worked regularly with the youth theatre group of the Voltaire-School in Potsdam. In 2014 he was invited to give a workshop at the youth theatre festival Klubszene Berlin.
